the essay paper is 250 marks. let that sink in. its worth more than any single gs paper. yet most aspirants treat it as an afterthought - something they will figure out in the exam hall. i did this in my first attempt and scored 98. second attempt with proper preparation i scored 148. heres everything i changed.
WHY MOST ESSAYS SCORE BELOW 120
i have peer-reviewed dozens of essays and the problems are almost always the same:
- no clear structure - reads like a stream of consciousness
2. too many quotes, too little analysis
3. one-dimensional approach - either all philosophical OR all factual
4. weak introduction and conclusion
5. no personal touch - reads like a wikipedia article
MY ESSAY STRUCTURE (THE TEMPLATE)
i use a consistent structure for every essay. some people say templates are bad but honestly having a skeleton helps you organize thoughts under exam pressure.
INTRODUCTION (100 words):
- start with a striking anecdote, quote, or scenario
- clearly state the central thesis of your essay
- outline the dimensions you will cover
- avoid dictionary definitions as openers (everyone does this)
BODY - MULTI DIMENSIONAL APPROACH (750 words):
i cover 4-5 dimensions depending on the topic:
- social dimension: how does this affect society, communities, individuals
- economic dimension: financial implications, development angle
- political/governance dimension: policy responses, institutional role
- philosophical/ethical dimension: moral questions, value conflicts
- environmental/scientific dimension: if relevant
- personal/individual dimension: human stories, ground level impact
each dimension gets roughly 150 words. within each dimension i include:
- one theoretical/philosophical point
- one factual example (data, scheme, case study)
- one personal observation or anecdote
CONCLUSION (100-150 words):
- do NOT summarize the essay
- offer a synthesis - a forward-looking perspective
- end with a powerful closing thought
- the conclusion should feel like an ELEVATION of the discussion
THE INTRODUCTION FORMULA
good introductions i have used:
- story based: "when my grandmother first voted in 1952, she walked 12 km to the polling booth..."
- contrast based: "in a nation that sends satellites to mars, 190 million people still go hungry..."
- question based: "can democracy survive in a society where information itself becomes a weapon?"
- observation based: "the smell of petrichor reminds me of my village where farming was not an occupation but an identity..."
HOW I PREPARE FOR ESSAY PAPER
month 1-2: read good essays
- read topper essays from forums and coaching compilations
- read editorials from the hindu and indian express as essay models
- read orwell, tagore, ambedkar essays for style inspiration
month 3-4: build content bank
- collect quotes (organize by theme: democracy, education, women, environment etc)
- collect data points (india specific statistics from economic survey, nfhs etc)
- collect anecdotes and stories (personal, historical, contemporary)
month 5-6: practice writing
- write one essay every week under timed conditions (90 minutes)
- get peer review or mentor evaluation
- analyze what worked and what didnt
TOPIC CATEGORIES TO PREPARE
upsc typically gives one abstract/philosophical topic and one concrete/policy topic in each section. prepare for both:
abstract: happiness, freedom, truth, justice, compassion, duty
concrete: technology and society, women empowerment, environment, governance, education
cross-cutting: india specific themes, international order, cultural identity
THE MALAYALAM LITERATURE CONNECTION
being a malayalam literature optional student, i have a natural advantage in essay writing. studying literature teaches you narrative structure, metaphor usage, and emotional expression. if you are a literature optional student, USE those skills in your essay paper. literary references add depth that generic quotes cannot.
i often weave in references from basheer, thakazhi, mt vasudevan nair into my essays when they fit. it adds a personal cultural dimension that examiners appreciate.
MY TOP TIPS
- practice handwriting - a neat essay gets more attention
2. use subheadings - it makes the essay easier to read and evaluate
3. balance is key - not too factual, not too philosophical
4. avoid controversial political opinions - be balanced
5. your unique perspective is your USP - dont write what everyone writes
what score did you get in essay last time? and what topic did you choose? 📝
