2024 essay: 112 (wrote philosophical essays, too abstract)
2025 essay: 135 (applied sociological framework)

what changed? structure and examples.

essay selection strategy:

upsc gives 4 essay topics each section (total 8, write 2).

i categorize:
- social issues (caste, gender, poverty)
- political governance (democracy, federalism)
- philosophical abstract (truth, courage, etc)
- science technology (ai, development)

i prefer: social issues and political governance (my comfort zone from sociology)

sociological framework for essays:

for any topic, i analyze through:

1. structural lens
- how does society/system cause this?
- institutional factors
- power dynamics

2. functional lens
- what purpose does this serve?
- who benefits, who loses?
- system maintenance vs change

3. conflict lens
- class/caste/gender conflicts involved?
- resistance and movements
- change through struggle

4. symbolic lens
- meanings and interpretations
- media representation
- cultural narratives

example: women empowerment essay

using my framework:

structural:
- patriarchal institutions (family, religion, law)
- educational and economic barriers
- policy gaps

functional:
- gender roles maintaining social order
- who benefits from status quo?

conflict:
- feminist movements
- legal reforms through struggle
- ongoing battles

symbolic:
- media stereotypes
- changing narratives
- role models

essay structure:

para 1: introduction (100-150 words)
- hook (quote, anecdote, statistic)
- define the topic
- thesis statement (your argument)

paras 2-4: body section 1 (400-500 words)
- main argument with evidence
- examples (india + world)
- counter argument

paras 5-7: body section 2 (400-500 words)
- second major argument
- examples
- connect to previous section

paras 8-10: body section 3 (300-400 words)
- third argument or way forward

WHY ESSAY MATTERS:
- 250 marks - same as one GS paper
- most aspirants neglect it thinking "we know how to write"
- scoring potential is HIGH if you crack the structure

ESSAY STRUCTURE THAT WORKS:

1. INTRODUCTION (150-200 words)
- hook the reader - quote, anecdote, or striking fact
- define the central theme
- mention what you will cover (roadmap)
- dont start with "In todays world..." please 😭

2. BODY (800-900 words)
- 4-5 paragraphs minimum
- each paragraph = one dimension of the topic
- dimensions to cover:
  * historical perspective
  * current scenario with data
  * different stakeholder views
  * challenges and opportunities
  * case studies (india + global)
  * philosophical/ethical angle
- use TORTURE method: Thesis, Opposition, Rebuttal, Thesis, Unity, Resolution, Examples

3. CONCLUSION (150-200 words)
- dont just summarize
- give way forward
- end with hope/call to action
