i started upsc preparation 6 months ago with zero knowledge about the exam pattern, zero connections in the upsc world, and a graduation degree in english literature that i wasnt sure would help at all. everything i knew came from youtube videos which are honestly 80 percent motivation and 20 percent actual strategy. so here is the no-nonsense roadmap i wish someone had given me on day one.

optional subject selection: do this by month 3. talk to at least 5 people who have taken different optionals. attend free introductory lectures of 3-4 optionals. consider: your graduation subject, syllabus length, scoring trends, overlap with GS, and most importantly your genuine interest. an optional you find boring will kill your motivation over 12-18 months of preparation.

current affairs: dont start elaborate current affairs note-making from day one. for the first 3 months just read one newspaper daily to build awareness. detailed note-making can begin once you have basic GS foundation. otherwise you wont understand the significance of what youre reading in the newspaper.

coaching or self-study: the honest answer is that coaching helps beginners who have no one to guide them but is not necessary if you have a good senior, mentor, or study group. online test series is almost essential regardless. i joined two test series - one for prelims and one for mains - and the regular testing keeps me accountable.

financial planning: budget at least 2-3 years. beyond books and test series, you might need coaching for optional, mock interview fees, and living expenses if youre away from home. i made a spreadsheet of all expected expenses and it totaled around 3 lakhs for 2 years (outside of living costs). plan accordingly.

mental preparation: this is the part nobody talks about in strategy videos. upsc is a multi-year commitment with uncertain outcomes. you will have months where you feel like youve learned nothing. you will see batchmates getting jobs while you study. you will question your decision. this is normal. build a support system - study group, mentor, family support - before you need it.

okay so i literally just started my upsc journey 3 months ago and the first advice everyone gives is READ NCERTS. but nobody tells you WHICH ones, in WHAT order, or what to do when ncerts feel too basic for some topics and too vague for others. so here is everything i figured out as a complete beginner.

THE NCERT REALITY

lets be honest - ncerts are great but they are school textbooks. they were not designed for upsc. some chapters are gold (like the polity chapters in class 11 political science) and some are honestly a waste of time for upsc purposes. you need to be selective.

MY NCERT READING ORDER (for fellow beginners)

start with these, in this exact order:
1. class 6-10 old ncert history (bipan chandra, rs sharma, satish chandra) - these are BETTER than new ncerts for history

- ncerts are actually solid here but supplement with nios modules for indian geography
- majid hussain geography through maps (cheap and effective)

- directly related to what ias officers do
- gs2 overlap is significant
- some bcom subjects touched governance

- marks have been unpredictable lately

confused between sociology and psir optional - which has better scope for beginners without humanities background okay so i've been thinking about this for weeks and need some real advice from people who've been through it.

the situation:

choosing optional is literally the most stressful decision ever. everyone has different opinions and most toppers just say "choose what you love" but like... i love sleeping. that's not an optional lol.

my background:

- dont judge my questions
- started serious prep few months back
- trying to figure out the optimal approach

what i've tried:

1. asked seniors - got 10 different answers
2. youtube research - even more confusing
3. reddit/quora - mostly outdated advice
4. coaching counselors - obviously biased

specific questions:

1. what was your decision making process?
2. did you regret your choice later?
3. any specific resources that helped you decide?
4. what would you do differently if starting again?

my current thinking:

leaning towards sociology because syllabus seems manageable and lots of overlap with gs. but concerned about subjectivity in marking.

why this matters:

upsc prep is already hard enough. making wrong choices early can cost valuable time. seen too many people switch optionals after 6 months and basically restart.

would really appreciate honest opinions from those who've been through this. not looking for generic advice - specific experiences help more.

also if there's anything i'm missing in my analysis please point it out. sometimes we have blind spots we can't see ourselves.

DAY 8-14: SETTING UP BASICS

bought ncerts (6-12) for:
- history (ancient, medieval, modern)
- geography
- polity (only 11-12)
- economics
- science

total cost: around 2000 rupees
don't buy all at once - start with what you'll read first

my schedule this week:
- 6 am wake up
- 6:30 - 8:30 ncert reading
- broke after 8:30 - went to work
- 6 pm - 8 pm newspaper + current affairs
- 8:30 - 10 pm revision/notes

DAY 15-21: FIRST REALITY CHECK

realized i was reading too slow
ncerts are meant to be finished faster
changed approach - read for concepts not memorization

also discovered:
- the hindu takes 1.5 hours initially (now down to 45 mins)
- making notes from everything is waste of time
- need to be selective

DAY 22-30: FINDING MY RHYTHM

current schedule (working professional):

morning (2 hrs):
- 1 hr ncert/static
- 1 hr previous day revision

evening (3 hrs):
- 1 hr newspaper
- 1.5 hr standard book
