Third and final attempt mindset - how I am approaching UPSC 2026 differently after two failures

this is it. third and final attempt. 2026 mains is my last shot at upsc. sharing how my approach has changed after two failures.

MY JOURNEY:

attempt 1 (2024):

  • prelims cleared
  • mains failed
  • reason: poor answer writing, time management disaster

attempt 2 (2025):

  • prelims cleared again
  • mains: wrote better but not good enough
  • missed cutoff by 15 marks
  • interview not reached

attempt 3 (2026):

  • this is the one. inshallah.

WHAT WENT WRONG PREVIOUSLY:

ATTEMPT 1 MISTAKES:

  1. started answer writing too late

started only 2 months before mains. way too late.

2. ignored essay paper

thought it was easy. scored 95. disaster.

3. optional overconfidence

psir is my strong area. didnt practice enough. scored 230.

4. time management in exam hall

left 2 questions unattempted in gs2 and gs3 each.

ATTEMPT 2 IMPROVEMENTS:

  1. started answer writing 6 months before

better but still not enough.

2. essay practice weekly

improved to 115. still not great.

3. optional test series

improved to 265. decent.

4. time management better

completed all questions but quality suffered.

STILL FAILED BECAUSE:

  • answer quality plateaued
  • didnt analyze weak areas deeply enough
  • mental fatigue affected performance
  • made silly mistakes in exam

WHAT IM CHANGING FOR ATTEMPT 3:

  1. COMPLETE SYLLABUS OVERHAUL

going back to basics. re-reading everything:

  • not skimming through
  • making fresh concise notes
  • understanding not memorizing

sound elementary but foundation was shaky.

2. DAILY ANSWER WRITING FROM DAY 1

yes from day 1. even basic topics.

  • 2 answers daily minimum
  • weekly evaluation
  • immediate correction cycle

3. ESSAY IS PRIORITY

dedicated 4 hours weekly for essay:

  • diverse topics
  • brainstorming practice
  • structure improvement
  • example bank building

targeting 135+ this time.

4. OPTIONAL DEPTH INCREASE

psir paper 2 needs more current linkages:

  • daily ir news tracking
  • foreign policy updates
  • international organization current events

targeting 280+ this time.

5. PHYSICAL FITNESS

previously ignored health. this time:

  • morning walk daily
  • yoga for concentration
  • proper sleep schedule
  • no junk food binge eating

fitness affects mental clarity. learned this hard way.

6. MENTAL PREPARATION

this is final attempt pressure. handling it by:

  • daily meditation
  • talking to counselor monthly
  • not isolating from family friends
  • accepting outcome whatever it is

7. SMART PREPARATION

  • focus on high weightage areas
  • pyq pattern based preparation
  • no new topics in last 3 months
  • revision cycles planned

TIMELINE:

jan-march 2026: foundation revision

april-june: mains intensive preparation

july: prelims final prep

august-sept: post prelims mains intensive

sept 15: mains exam (expected)

MINDSET SHIFT:

previously: "i have more attempts left"

now: "this is the only attempt"

urgency is different. motivation is different. fear of failure is real but channeling it productively.

FOR FELLOW FINAL ATTEMPT ASPIRANTS:

  1. we are not alone

2. failure doesnt define us

3. one more attempt is still possible

4. but treat it as final even if not

5. backup is not betrayal

my backup: state psc, teaching, further studies. having backup keeps me sane.

MESSAGE TO 2026 MAINS ASPIRANTS:

whether its your first or third attempt, give your absolute best. jo hoga dekha jayega, but regret nahi hona chahiye.

will share monthly progress. lets do this together.

varanasi se ek aur attempt. is baar pakka. 🙏
