Became a human encyclopedia but couldnt present answers effectively. Slightly better score but still not good enough - around 220 combined. Third attempt (2023): Complete strategy overhaul. Realized that UPSC History is about understanding historical processes, cause-effect relationships, and presenting balanced analysis. Not just factual recall. Started with NCERT foundation again. Yes, in third attempt! Read class 6-12 history NCERT to get basic chronology and themes clear. Then moved to standard books but with different approach. For Ancient India: RS Sharma with focus on economic and social processes, not just political history. For Medieval India: Satish Chandra but connected events with contemporary sources and different perspectives. For Modern India: Bipan Chandra was game-changer. His analytical approach taught me to see independence struggle as multi-faceted movement, not just chronological events. World History: Norman Lowe but with focus on themes like nationalism, imperialism, world wars impact rather than country-wise study. The key breakthrough was answer writing practice. Earlier attempts me answers factual dump hote the. Third attempt me learned to structure answers with intro, body with subheadings, and conclusion. Most importantly, started including different perspectives and historiographical debates in answers. For example, when writing about Mughal decline, included perspectives of different historians - economic factors, political factors, external invasions, etc. This showed analytical depth rather than one-dimensional understanding. Daily routine: 6 hours History study, 2 hours answer writing, 1 hour current affairs linking with historical events. Sunday complete test with evaluation. Result: History optional score jumped to 290+ combined. The lesson: History optional is not about memorization, its about understanding historical processes and presenting analytical answers. history optional syllabus is genuinely massive. ancient medieval modern world history - its like preparing for four different subjects. and upsc has this beautiful habit of asking questions from the most obscure corners of the syllabus. that 2024 question on harappan trade networks? nobody expected that level of specificity from ancient india.

here is what i changed for attempt three. first i categorized every chapter into three buckets: guaranteed questions (modern india, world wars, freedom struggle), frequent questions (maurya gupta delhi sultanate mughal), and surprise questions (everything else). i spend 60 percent of my time on guaranteed, 30 on frequent, and only 10 on surprise category. this was hard because my instinct was to cover everything equally.

second change - map work. i was ignoring maps thinking they dont matter much. but when you understand the geographical context of battles, trade routes, and kingdom expansions, your answers become richer automatically. i now study every major dynasty with a map open. vijayanagara empire makes so much more sense when you see its strategic location between krishna and tungabhadra rivers.

third change was answer writing practice. i used to write practice answers at home with books open. completely useless. now i do timed tests - pick a random pyq, close everything, write for 15 minutes, then check. the gap between what you think you know and what you can actually reproduce under pressure is shocking.

for modern india specifically, spectrum alone isnt enough anymore. upsc is asking about lesser known movements, tribal revolts, peasant uprisings that spectrum covers in like 2 paragraphs. supplement with bipin chandra for freedom struggle and sekhar bandyopadhyay for alternative perspectives.

for any question involving territories or trade routes or military campaigns i draw rough maps. even badly drawn maps score better than pure text. examiner knows you understand spatial context.

flowcharts for administrative questions. diagrams for economic systems. breaks the monotony.

quote integration:

learned 20 historian quotes for each section. romila thapar for ancient. irfan habib for medieval. bipan chandra for modern. one relevant quote per answer shows depth.

upsc loves when you mention historiographical debates. aryan migration vs out of india. feudalism in india debate. temple destruction narratives. shows you read beyond textbooks.

time management hack:

lesson 3: revision schedule is non-negotiable

if its not in revision schedule, its not getting revised. if its not revised, its not getting written in exam. simple math.

lesson 4: mental health affects scores

first two attempts, i was anxious mess. this time investing in exercise, sleep, occasional breaks. a calm brain writes better answers.

lesson 5: peer group matters

alone preparation is inefficient. found 3 serious aspirants. we discuss, debate, share notes. learning accelerated 2x at least.

CHANGE 5: SELECTIVE DEPTH

instead of knowing everything superficially:

DEEP TOPICS (can write 3000 words):
- mauryan administration
- mughal mansabdari system
- gandhi and congress strategies
- industrial revolution
- world wars (causes, course, consequences)

BROAD TOPICS (know basics):
- sangam age
- pre-mauryan states
- vijayanagara (unless asked specifically)

ANSWER WRITING FORMULA:

for 20 markers:

para 1: context and background
para 2-4: main arguments with evidence
para 5: historiographical debate (what historians say)
para 6: conclusion with assessment

for 10 markers:
- direct answer, no fluff
- 2-3 main points
- one example per point

MENTAL PREPARATION:

ATTEMPT 1 (2023): scored 87 in prelims. cutoff was 91. missed by 4 marks.

what went wrong:
- thought ncerts are enough for prelims. they are not. you need to go beyond
- ignored current affairs thinking static will carry me. upsc is 50% current now
- did zero answer writing before mains because i wasnt even sure id clear prelims
- bought 15 books, read 3 properly. classic mistake
- no revision strategy. read once and forgot

ATTEMPT 2 (2024): cleared prelims with 112. mains - 680 marks. cutoff was 700.

what went wrong:
- answer writing started 2 months before mains. should have started from day 1
- wrote generic answers. no case studies, no examples, no data
- essay was my weakest - wrote 1200 words of nothing basically
- ignored ethics paper thinking its common sense. its not.
- optional marks were okay but gs pulled me down

what im doing differently now (ATTEMPT 3):

1. answer writing daily from jan itself. even if its just 2 answers. building muscle memory

2. making a database of examples/case studies for every topic. governance schemes with stats, constitutional cases, international examples

3. essay practice every sunday. getting it evaluated. learning structure

4. ethics is now priority. thinkers, case studies, real life applications

5. current affairs integration - not separate, mixed with static. when i read about federalism, i add recent judgments and examples

6. mock tests every 2 weeks for prelims. analyzing mistakes not just checking score

7. staying in a study group this time. accountability helps

the thing about multiple attempts is the stigma. people look at you differently. but honestly? most toppers are 2nd/3rd attempters. this exam tests persistence more than intelligence.
