To everyone having #Malayalam Literature as an optional and expecting to write mains this time:
Please start reading the Paper 2, Part B novels regularly — ideally, begin by next week.
If you wait until the test schedule to start reading, it will be nearly impossible to finish 9 novels of 250+ pages each within 3 weeks.
Last year, the questions in Malayalam Paper 2 were very narrow and specific.
It was UPSC’s way of saying: “Syllabus il ulla books proper ayit read cheythitt exam ezhuthan vannal mathi”🤓
So, make it a habit to read at least a little every day
How to approach it:
Pick up the novel.
Look at previous years' UPSC questions.
Form a mental picture of the kind of questions UPSC asks.
Read the novel actively — looking for points and examples that you can fill in previous questions.
For example:
While reading Bharathaparyadanam, keep an eye out for catchy or striking dialogues — these are often framed as direct questions in the exam.
In Higvitta, observe how the language of football is creatively used by the author to enhance the narrative and communicate ideas more effectively to the reader.
While reading Chemmeen, focus on the distinctiveness of the local dialect and how it adds authenticity and depth to the novel.
Don’t read the novels passively.
Don’t assume that you can manage with just summaries — that won’t be enough.
Start early,you’ll thank yourself later.
