Rice Theory
(Picked it up from The School of Life)
A nation whose diet has traditionally dependent on rice develops certain qualities. Wheat is a relatively modern plant.
Rice, if we think of it, is the worst plant to cultivate in modern times. It does not sprout unless it is under water, and refuses to grow unless it is out of it. Interestingly however, the most successful civilisations have invariably cultivated rice.
Consider the Japanese for example. The way Japanese are- thorough, precise, traditional, focussed on "we" can be traced back to virtues they had to exercise in their rice fields.
On the other hand, western countries with their vast wheat farms signify individualism, self reliance, impatience, innovation.
(Now use your own interpretation, you could extrapolate to say India is a happy blend of wheat and rice, or how a civilisation has many layers and what we eat translates into who we become :p)
