PURPOSELESSNESS
I used a part of this idea as a conclusion to the essay "History is a series of victories won by scientific man over romantic man".
The argument being, even if the scientific man creates history, the romantic man nurtures it and makes the present worth living. There's space for both- the scientific man and romantic man.
Purposelessness
(Picked from After Skool)
The word "School" originated from "schola" which means leisure. Scholars were called gentlemen, who had enough resources to sit down and study all the "charming irrelevancies of life".
The Chinese call it "purposelessness".
Why do the waves hit the seashore? Why does nature exist?
We try and superimpose an engineering based view on to the Universe. Oh the birds are singing, it must be a mating call. Oh they have all these colour, it is to attract a potential mate.
I ask them, why? Why do they need to attract a mate? For survival, they say.
But, why survive? And this is where they fail.
Humans sing, dance, create art- not to achieve something out of it. Birds sing and dance not necessarily for survival. They simply do. It is what existence is. Purposelessness.
