Electric Engineering Optional resources

EE booklist

Paper-1

1. Circuit Theory: book by Abhijit Chakrabarti

2. Signals and Systems: Oppenheim (Pearson)

3. E.M. Theory: Principles of E.M. By Sadiku and Kulkarni

4. Analog Electronics: i) Microelectronics by Donald A. Neamen

ii) Electronic Devices and Circuits by J.B. Gupta

( Most toppers recommend this book. So I also bought J.B. Gupta. But it was mostly waste of time. Only ideal op-amps is covered nicely. Last year, I researched and bought the Donald Neamen book and found it to be very useful.)

5. Digital Electronics: Digital Design by Morris Mano and Celitti

6. Energy Conversion: i) Electric Machines by Ashfaq Hussain

ii) Principles of Electric Machines by P.C. Sen

7. Power Electronics and Electric Drives: i) P.S. Bhimbra

ii) Fundamentals of Electric Drives by G.K. Dubey

8. Analog Communication: i) B.P. Lathi ii) Sanjay Sharma iii) Simon Haykin

(Ideally I also want to recommend only 1 book per subject. But PYQs from communication, especially digital communication have been tough. Direct questions have been asked from all these 3 books. Can't help.)

Paper-2

1. Control Systems: i) Anand Kumar ii) Norman Nise

2. Microprocessors & Microsystems: i) Ramesh Gaonkar

3. Measurement and Instrumentation: A.K. Sawhney

4. Power Systems Analysis and Control: i) Grainger and Stevenson ii) CL Wadhwa

(direct questions have been asked from both these books)

5. Power Systems Protection: i) Badri Ram & Vishwakarma ii) Paithankar & Bhide

iii) CL Wadhwa

6. Digital Communication: i) Sanjay Sharma ii) Simon Haykin iii) B.P. Lathi

( Direct questions have been asked from all these 3 books. Can't help.)

Other resources for EE

1. PYQs from MadeEasy

2. Previous Year Next IAS EE optional Test Series

3. Next IAS Postal Study Package (though I did not go for this)

4. ESE PYQs (personally I did not get any time for this)

  1. Books recommended in bold--> direct questions have been asked in UPSC EE optional paper

2. Instead of buying all these books, an alternate strategy could be to buy the NextIAS postal study package and then buy books for those subjects only where you find that it is not covered properly in the NextIAS/MadeEasy book.
