Familiarize Yourself with the Syllabus: Pay attention to the specific points outlined in the syllabus and understand what the board expects from you during the interview.
These expectations can be categorised as follows:
Mental Alertness:
- Show attention to detail and ensure that your responses directly address the questions asked.
Balance of Judgement:
- Demonstrate your ability to view issues and topics from multiple angles.
Variety and Depth of Interest:
- Understand yourself well and be prepared to discuss your background and interests listed in the Detailed Application Form (DAF).
- Stay informed about current events and developments.
Ability for Social Cohesion and Leadership:
- Display respect for diversity and an understanding of social values.
Critical Powers of Assimilation:
- Formulate informed opinions on various issues and events.
Clear and Logical Exposition:
- Provide structured answers with a logical flow of points.
Intellectual and Moral Integrity:
- Maintain coherence in your responses and exhibit respect for constitutional and civil service values.
The Four Pillars of Interview Preparation:
a. DAF Preparation: Prepare detailed question and answer sets for each aspect mentioned in your DAF.
b. Self-awareness and HR Questions: Be ready to answer questions related to your personal qualities and experiences. Additionally, prepare for situational questions that assess your decision-making abilities and problem-solving skills.
c. Current Affairs Preparation: A comprehensive understanding of at least one newspaper is essential.
d. Communication Skills: Work on enhancing your communication skills by practicing regularly. Engage in mirror practice to improve your expressions, and analyze recorded mock interviews to identify areas for improvement.
Group Preparation: (most helpful in my interview preparation, we spent regular 2 hours regularly on news discussion)
- Form a group of 4-5 aspirants who are also preparing for the UPSC interview.
- Analyze newspaper
- Discuss opinion on various issues
- Conduct regular peer mock interviews
