Essay strategy

I have received multiple queries on how to get a good score in essay. My score in essay (142) was a result of a well thought of plan which I was able to execute on the D-day.

The syllabus itself has set the demands of the essay. It should be coherent, well structured and pleasant to read.

Some do's and don't s of essay

Do's :

1. Choose the topic calmly. There is only one parameter which should guide you whilst choosing the topic and that is : how well you understood the topic.

Other thoughts like 'I should choose a topic which fewer candidates would attempt' or likewise is a sureshot recipe for disaster.

I chose the 2 most common topics of this year : ships and roof, yet I could score decent.

2. Brainstorming : After 5 mins of decision making, utilise the next 10-15 minutes for scribbling thoughts /dimensions /examples. Let it flow and write whatever comes to your mind without judging it. After this, arrange your thoughts, organise them and prioritise the sequence of dimensions.

3. Writing the essay : The introduction and conclusion has to be catchy. Use a 'hook', and make sure throughout the essay that the reader is interested. Use anecdotes, stories, examples phrases proverbs etc to do this.

4. Making sure the essay is neat, underlined and presentation is perfect.

5. You are free to use sub headings. It makes it convenient to read.

Don't s

1. Using too much optional knowledge, thinkers, philosophical jargons in the essay. The language of essay should be simple, free flowing rather than flowery.

2. Following the PELSET approach in essay.

3. Using firstly-secondly - lastly type of words /structure. Kills the fun.

4. Giving cliche masala ready made market - compilations based examples , anecdotes. Be innovative. Find your own examples.

5. Not brainstorming enough and rushing into the essay.
