Indian Express vs The Hindu for UPSC - honest comparison after reading both daily for 8 months

the eternal upsc debate: the hindu or indian express? after reading both daily for 8 months, here is my honest comparison. spoiler: there is no clear winner.nnMY EXPERIMENT:nnfor first 4 months i read only the hindu. next 4 months i added indian express. now i read both selectively. this comparison is based on actual experience, not what coaching teachers say.nnTHE HINDU STRENGTHS:nn1. EDITORIAL QUALITYnnthe hindu editorials are gold for essay and gs2. the language is sophisticated. the arguments are nuanced. if you want to learn how to structure arguments, read hindu editorials daily. they literally teach you how to write mains answers.nn2. INTERNATIONAL COVERAGEnnfor foreign affairs, the hindu is superior. their correspondents actually live in different countries. the analysis is deeper. for PSIR optional and GS2 international relations, the hindu is essential.nn3. SCIENCE AND ENVIRONMENTnntheir science section is consistently good. environment coverage is thorough. for GS3 environment questions, hindu is reliable.nn4. CONSISTENCYnnthe hindu maintains consistent quality. you know what to expect. there is a certain reliability in their coverage.nnTHE HINDU WEAKNESSES:nn1. SOMETIMES TOO ACADEMICnntheir language can be unnecessarily complex. some editorials are written for professors, not aspirants. i sometimes read a paragraph three times without understanding the point.nn2. LIMITED INTERNAL SECURITYnnfor internal security topics, the hindu coverage is inadequate. they dont cover naxalism, border issues, intelligence matters deeply.nn3. ECONOMY COVERAGEnneconomic coverage is okay but not great. they explain less. assumes reader already knows basics.nnINDIAN EXPRESS STRENGTHS:nn1. EXPLAINED SECTIONnnthis is indian express superpower. their explained section is made for upsc. complex topics broken down simply. i genuinely learn from these articles.nn2. GOVERNANCE AND POLICYnnfor understanding how government actually works, IE is better. they cover scheme implementations, policy decisions, administrative changes in depth.nn3. INTERNAL SECURITYnntheir coverage of security issues is comprehensive. naxal affairs, border disputes, intelligence community - IE covers these well.nn4. MORE ACCESSIBLE LANGUAGEnneasier to read and understand. concepts are explained, not just stated. good for building basics.nn5. INVESTIGATIVE JOURNALISMnntheir investigations often become important for governance questions. they expose administrative issues that become case studies.nnINDIAN EXPRESS WEAKNESSES:nn1. INCONSISTENT QUALITYnnsome days are excellent, some are mediocre. the hindu is more consistent.nn2. EDITORIALS NOT AS STRONGnntheir opinion pieces are good but not as argument-rich as hindu editorials. for essay prep, hindu editorials are better.nn3. INTERNATIONAL COVERAGE GAPSnnnot as strong on foreign affairs unless it directly affects india.nnMY CURRENT APPROACH:nnmorning routine:n- indian express explained section (15 min)n- IE editorial page scan (10 min)n- the hindu editorial (15 min)n- the hindu international page (10 min)n- skip rest and use monthly compilationsnntotal: 50 minutes. covers both papers efficiently.nnFOR DIFFERENT STAGES:nnbeginner (first 3 months):n- start with indian express onlyn- focus on explained sectionn- build basics firstn- dont overwhelm yourself with two papersnnintermediate (3-6 months):n- add the hindu editorialsn- start noting down editorial argumentsn- use them in answer writing practicennadvanced (6+ months):n- selective reading from bothn- focus on what previous year papers actually askn- skip what you already knownnFINAL VERDICT:nnif forced to choose ONE paper:n- for mains answer writing: the hindun- for understanding concepts: indian expressn- for prelims current affairs: either works, just be consistentnnbut honestly? read both selectively. 50 minutes combined is manageable and gives you complete coverage.nnthe newspaper you READ is better than the newspaper you plan to read. consistency matters more than which paper you choose.
