been preparing alongside 9-6 job for 18 months now. no coaching, self study only. sharing what actually works when you have limited time.
first the reality check:
full time aspirants study 8-10 hours. you get 3-4 hours max. you CANNOT cover everything they cover. accept this.
so strategy has to be different. efficiency over volume.
my actual daily schedule:
morning 5:30-7:00 AM (1.5 hours):
- fresh mind for conceptual subjects
- optional or polity or economy deep reading
- no phone, no distractions
- coffee and study. period.
commute (if applicable) 45 mins:
- podcast format content (insights ias, unacademy shorts)
- revision of previous day notes on phone
- current affairs audio
lunch break 30 mins:
- newspaper analysis on phone
- the hindu editorial quick read
- note 2-3 keywords for later elaboration
evening 8:30-10:00 PM (1.5 hours):
- lighter subjects or revision
- current affairs compilation
- test series analysis if weekend test done
- answer writing practice (2-3 answers)
weekend strategy:
saturday 4-5 hours: one full mock test OR detailed answer writing session
sunday 5-6 hours: revision of week + one subject deep dive
what i cut ruthlessly:
- multiple source dependency (one book per subject only)
- newspaper physical copies (online filtered reading)
- excessive optional depth (exam oriented only)
- prelims specific prep initially (integrated approach)
what helped most:
- fixed schedule non-negotiable: family knows 5:30-7 AM and 8:30-10 PM are blocked
2. sunday meal prep: saves cooking time on weekdays
3. workplace boundaries: no extra projects, no weekend work, very clear with manager about commitments
4. social media detox: instagram deleted, twitter only for upsc updates, no youtube rabbit holes
5. health priority: 30 min walk daily, proper sleep, cant study if exhausted
progress tracking:
monthly targets not daily. "this month finish economy basics" not "today 30 pages". realistic with energy fluctuations.
quarterly mock tests to check where you stand. dont need weekly tests initially.
mental game:
working professional biggest advantage: income security. no financial pressure.
biggest disadvantage: fatigue and limited time.
accept that your preparation will take longer. 2-3 attempts is normal for working professionals. adjust expectations accordingly.
