failed prelims twice. geography was my weakness despite being my optional. third attempt i analyzed my mistakes systematically. sharing what worked.
why geography prelims is tricky:
syllabus overlap with class 11 12 ncerts gives false confidence. but upsc asks application based questions. rote learning ncerts not enough.
maps are tested indirectly. not always label this map. but locate xyz which requires map visualization.
current geography questions increasing. climate events disasters are now regular features.
my mistake analysis:
attempt 1: studied ncerts thoroughly but ignored maps. failed 3 geography questions that needed location knowledge.
attempt 2: did maps but not current geography. failed on questions linking recent events to geographical concepts.
what i changed for attempt 3:
map practice daily:
15 minutes every morning tracing maps. india political physical river systems. world political major physical features.
i bought blank maps in bulk. traced important features daily. within 2 months could draw major features from memory.
for any place in news i immediately located on map. ukraine conflict meant learning eastern europe geography. houthi crisis meant red sea geography.
current geography integration:
made monthly current geography compilation. any climate event disaster infrastructure project gets geographical analysis. what region what physical features what climate patterns.
elimination technique:
geography prelims questions often have one clearly wrong option. identify that first. then use geographical logic for remaining.
example: if question asks about western disturbances effect and one option says affects kerala directly - eliminate immediately. western disturbances affect northwest india.
ncerts plus approach:
ncerts are foundation but not sufficient. goh cheng leong for physical geography. khullar for india geography. majid husain for human geography.
but dont read cover to cover. use pyq analysis to identify which topics asked repeatedly.
pyq analysis finding:
physical geography of india: 3-4 questions every year
climatology: 2-3 questions
indian rivers: 1-2 questions
world geography: 1-2 questions
environmental geography: 2-3 questions
test strategy:
do geography questions first while mind is fresh. spatial reasoning needs alertness. attempting them tired leads to silly mistakes.
result: attempt 3 cleared with comfortable margin. geography section was 85 percent correct compared to 50 percent earlier.
