failed prelims 3 times. 2024 cleared. sharing actual mistakes not generic advice.
mistake 1: ignoring CSAT completely
first two attempts i thought general quota means CSAT is formality. scored 75 and 82 out of 200. cutoff was 90.
fix: dedicated 2 weeks before prelims for CSAT. practiced previous year papers. reading comprehension is free marks if you practice.
mistake 2: current affairs overload
spent too much time on obscure current affairs. remembered which minister said what about random scheme. didnt help.
fix: focused on static + major schemes + international events only. stopped reading every daily quiz. 80% prelims is static heavy anyway.
mistake 3: not analyzing pyq properly
solving pyq is not analysis. counting topic frequency and question style is analysis.
fix: made excel sheet. 2015-2023 all questions categorized by topic, difficulty, factual vs analytical. realized geography asked same types repeatedly. economy questions follow patterns.
mistake 4: too many sources per subject
history: ncert + spectrum + bipin chandra + nitin singhania. overlap caused confusion.
fix: one main source per subject + pyq based gap filling only. spectrum alone covered 95% of history asked.
mistake 5: starting new topics in last month
learned ancient history in last 30 days first attempt. zero retention.
fix: last 45 days only revision of already covered material. new topics need time to settle.
mistake 6: mock test hoarding
gave 60+ mocks. never analyzed properly. same mistakes repeated.
fix: reduced to 30 mocks. each one analyzed thoroughly. maintained error log. specific weaknesses targeted.
mistake 7: elimination technique not developed
in actual exam, knew 60 answers confidently. struggled with 40. guessed randomly.
fix: practiced elimination. 2 options wrong out of 4 means 50% chance even without knowing answer. patterns in wrong options exist.
mistake 8: time management in exam
spent 2+ hours on paper 1. rushed paper 2. stupid errors in CSAT.
fix: practiced with strict 2 hour limit. developed 30 minute checkpoint system. if not done 50 questions by 60 mins, move faster.
mistake 9: revision schedule was absent
read environment in february. forgot by june.
fix: spaced repetition. revision cycles at week 1, week 3, month 2, month 4. topics stayed fresh.
mistake 10: cutoff obsession
constantly checking expected cutoffs. unnecessary stress.
fix: focused on maximizing my score. cutoff is outside my control. prepared for 110+ target regardless.
after fixing these, cleared prelims with 102 marks (2024 cutoff was 98). nothing special, just avoided the mistakes.
