weber is asked almost every year. directly or indirectly. made exhaustive notes after reading weber multiple times from different sources.
starting with SOCIAL ACTION types:
- zweckrational (instrumentally rational) - means-end calculation
2. wertrational (value rational) - action driven by values regardless of consequences
3. affective - driven by emotions
4. traditional - driven by custom/habit
this classification is fundamental. many questions ask you to analyze phenomenon using social action types.
IDEAL TYPE methodology:
weber said social reality is too complex. we need analytical constructs to study it. ideal type is mental construct that emphasizes certain aspects.
characteristics:
- not empirically found in pure form
- not average or most common type
- not normatively ideal
- used for comparison with reality
examples: bureaucracy as ideal type, protestant ethic ideal type, charismatic leader ideal type.
BUREAUCRACY (most asked):
characteristics of ideal type bureaucracy:
- hierarchy of offices
- written rules and regulations
- technical qualifications for recruitment
- separation of official position from personal life
- career structure with promotion possibility
- fixed salary and pension
- official files and records
advantages: efficiency, predictability, impersonality (fairness)
dysfunctions (weber himself noted these):
- iron cage of rationality
- dehumanization
- goal displacement
- trained incapacity
link to merton and gouldner critique for better answer.
AUTHORITY types:
- traditional - based on belief in sanctity of age old traditions (kings, tribal chiefs)
2. charismatic - based on exceptional qualities of individual (gandhi, revolutionary leaders)
3. legal-rational - based on belief in legality of rules and right of those elevated to authority (modern bureaucratic positions)
routinization of charisma:
charismatic authority is unstable. after leader dies or charisma fades, it gets routinized into either traditional or legal-rational. congress party evolution post gandhi-nehru is good indian example.
PROTESTANT ETHIC:
weber argued calvinist protestantism contributed to capitalist spirit. concepts:
- predestination anxiety
- worldly asceticism
- calling (beruf)
- systematic work ethic
critiques: capitalism existed before protestantism in some areas, correlation not causation debate.
indian application: can analyze similar religion-economy connections. jain business communities, marwari ethics etc.
STRATIFICATION:
weber gave multidimensional view vs marx unidimensional (class only).
three dimensions:
- class (economic - market position)
- status (social honor - lifestyle)
- party (political power)
these can be independent. high status low class (brahmin priest). high class low status (nouveau riche historically).
for exam link this to caste system analysis. caste combines all three dimensions which makes it unique.
this covers maybe 70% of weber syllabus. verstehen methodology and comparative historical method topics need separate post.
