wrote multiple test series this year. sharing honest comparison for prelims 2026. no paid reviews, just my experience.
DISCLAIMER: this is MY experience. different people may have different opinions. try free tests from each before buying.
TEST SERIES I WROTE:
- vision ias prelims test series
2. forum ias prelims test series
3. insights on india (free tests)
4. civilsdaily (some tests)
VISION IAS:
PROS:
- closest to actual upsc level
- good explanation for each answer
- all india ranking helps gauge preparation
- consistent quality across tests
- current affairs integration is excellent
CONS:
- expensive (around 6500)
- sometimes too factual
- static portion questions are straightforward
- limited personalised feedback
DIFFICULTY: moderate to high (similar to upsc)
MY SCORE RANGE: 95-125 out of 200
VERDICT: best overall test series if you can afford it. industry standard for a reason.
FORUM IAS:
PROS:
- very good current affairs tests
- monthly current affairs compilation is useful
- reasonable price (around 4500)
- good for csat preparation also
- detailed solutions with sources
CONS:
- some questions are tricky for the sake of being tricky
- occasionally factual errors in solutions
- ranking system not as accurate (fewer students)
- schedule can be hectic
DIFFICULTY: moderate (sometimes easier than upsc)
MY SCORE RANGE: 105-130 out of 200
VERDICT: good value for money. especially strong for current affairs tests.
INSIGHTS ON INDIA:
PROS:
- free tests available (huge advantage)
- good for beginners
- simple interface
- decent explanations
CONS:
- quality inconsistent
- some questions are directly from books
- less challenging than actual exam
- limited test variety
DIFFICULTY: easy to moderate
MY SCORE RANGE: 120-145 out of 200
VERDICT: use free tests for practice but dont rely only on this.
CIVILSDAILY:
PROS:
- free daily mcq quizzes
- mobile friendly
- good for revision
- prelims pulse is helpful
CONS:
- full length tests not as good
- sometimes outdated questions
- technical issues with platform
VERDICT: supplement to main test series, not replacement.
MY RECOMMENDATION:
BUDGET TIGHT:
- forum ias prelims (primary)
2. insights free tests (supplementary)
3. civilsdaily daily quizzes (daily practice)
CAN AFFORD:
- vision ias (primary)
2. forum ias current affairs tests (supplementary)
3. previous year papers (must do)
HOW I USE TEST SERIES:
WEEKLY SCHEDULE:
- saturday: full length test (3 hours strictly timed)
- sunday morning: detailed analysis
- sunday evening: revision of wrong answers
- weekdays: topic-wise tests if available
ANALYSIS METHOD:
for each test, i note:
- silly mistakes (could have been avoided)
2. knowledge gaps (didnt know the answer)
3. conceptual errors (understood wrongly)
4. guessed correctly (luck, not knowledge)
this helps identify where to focus.
TEST TAKING STRATEGY:
- attempt sure answers first (30-40 questions)
- then attempt probable answers (30-40 questions)
- finally gamble on remaining
- never leave negatives to luck
SCORE EXPECTATIONS:
vision ias tests:
- 100+: on track
- 120+: doing well
- 140+: excellent
actual upsc:
- aim for 100+ to be safe
- 90+ usually clears cutoff
test series are tools, not destinations. use them to identify gaps and improve. dont get demotivated by low scores - they are meant to be harder than actual exam.
