Hello everyone.  
I'm sure all of you must have started studying for mains. As promised I'll be sharing the basic principles I implemented for my mains preparation over here. 
 
1. Syllabus completion and time allocation  
 
You must read the syllabus and PYQs thoroughly and allocate time for topics accordingly. For example, agriculture in GS3 is 4 questions (50 marks total) and is as important as economy (50 marks) or even history (modern history almost never has 50 marks worth of questions).  
This will make you realize that some topics are more important than others and you can use your time efficiently. Additionally you should also allocate enough time to answer writing and giving mock tests. A draft schedule has been shared in the previous post. 
 
2. Answer writing  
 
This is the single most important determinant of your marks in the mains examination. Please start practicing ASAP. Very often aspirants keep thinking that they will start practicing only after completing the syllabus properly, but that day never comes. Don't fall for this trap. 
  
Answer writing has 3 benefits - 
 
A. Better time management - You can practice doing 10 markers in 7 minutes and 15 markers in 11 minutes.  
B. Better content recollection - As you start to write more you increase your ability to tap into the knowledge area of your brain and you can remember more information quickly. This helps you to write better answers at a faster rate. 
C. Better presentation - A good answer does not only have good content, but is also presented beautifully. As this is a subjective examination, examiners will be more impressed by structured and well presented answers.  
I personally used to write half a paper everyday - 5 x 10 markers and 5 x 15 markers. This would only take 1.5 hours and allows you to focus on your studies as well.  
 
3. Balancing optional and GS  
 
This is a very personal choice, and I would suggest that you tackle the paper in which you feel underconfident, first. For example, if you have done your optional well, then you start with ethics or agriculture and society etc. which are topics that you might not have covered properly during your prelims preparation. Similarly, if you have an optional such as maths, which requires immense practice, then you should tackle your optional first. Please remember that balancing both is very important. There are many examples of people with 300+ marks in optional, who did not clear mains, and many people with 420+ marks in GS who met with the same fate. 400 in GS + 260 in optional + 120 in essay is good enough for a top 100 rank and this can only be achieved if you have done all papers well.  
 
4. Tips and tricks that worked for me  
 
a. Short notes - I made short notes for GS and the optional papers which I would revise again and again. This helped me to memorize important information, especially for my optional.  
 
b. Structures - I cannot overstate the importance of structures during preparation. Creating structures helps you to write better answers and have a structural mental model while thinking. For example in Art and culture you can have a basic structure of - architecture, paintings, literature (this can be further sub divided into religious, scientific, plays etc), sculptures and statues and their techniques (rock cut, marble, bronze casting etc), popular and local art. This structure can be used in all answers and it will also help you remember and recall properly. This works very well for society, art and culture, economy, international relations, internal security, science and technology and ethics.  
 
c. Don't write for yourself, write for the examiner - You must realise that during the checking of the mains papers, examiners are under immense time stress and they have to check questions quickly. It is your job to make their job easier. Like anyone else in the world, a lot of examiners may not do their job as per the book ie. they might not read all the answers word to word, or may subconsciously cut your marks because your handwriting is bad or because your answer is a wall of text. So it is my humble request that you keep this in mind and make sure your answer is not only rich in content but also well written and well presented.  
 
d. Confidence - I often felt underconfident during my mains preparation because of the vastness of the syllabus, the time crunch and the eternal dilemma of balancing studying and answer writing. It is very important to realize that EVERYONE feels this way. Even the very top rankers in the exam are very stressed about their mains result and final results. That is the nature of the exam and perhaps that is what they are testing. Give it your all and have faith in your preparation and I'm sure you'll do very well in the upcoming mains examination.

I would also like to suggest all of you to make a schedule for the next three months which includes a time table for completion of syllabus, scheduling tests, revision and answer writing practice. This will give you a perspective on how little time you have left before the mains examination. A back of the envelope calculation might look something like this - 

Essay - 5 days preparation and revision + 4 practice  papers 

GS 1 - 10 - 15 days for preparation and multiple revisions + 4 practice papers

GS 2 - 10 - 15 days for preparation and multiple revisions + 4 practice papers
 
GS 3 - 10 - 15 days for preparation and multiple revisions + 4 practice papers

GS 4 - 10 - 15 days for preparation and multiple revisions + 4 practice papers

Optional - 30-40 days for preparation, revision, short note making etc + 8 practice papers. 

Even in this sample time table you can see that even if the minimum days are taken, they add up to 75 days and practice tests are 28 in number (14 days of 6 hours of answer writing). Please make sure you realize that now you will have to finish entire GS papers (which include new topics such as governance, IR, society, ethics etc.) in 10-15 days each including all revisions. 

 This is the most important leg of the exam that will determine your rank, so please make sure you give it your all during the upcoming 3 months!

I will be sharing my detailed mains strategy in 2-3 days time on this channel itself. I hope all of you can benefit from it and do well in the mains exam!

Greetings everyone!
I am very happy to announce that my anthropology notes have successfully been transcribed in the form of a formal book. 

I was very fortunate to get a good score in anthropology (315 - 169 in P1 and 146 in P2) and I feel that my notes cover all parts of the syllabus very well. 

One of the challenges I faced was that no single book or set of notes was good enough to cover all parts of the syllabus properly. 
I referred to various books including ember, brain tree, Telugu akademi, munirathnam, vaid, IGNOU, xaxa report and 14 other books that I mentioned in my L2A video on YouTube. I also referred to the notes of various toppers of anthropology. 

Almost all of these sources are good, but the problem that I faced was that they often were very good for 10-20% of the syllabus and average for the remainder of the syllabus.
My strategy was to take the best content from all these sources and compile my notes to make them complete. 
The second part of my strategy was to make notes in an answer format. This meant that my notes for any topic would have an introduction, subheadings for different parts of the body, and finally a conclusion. 

This strategy really helped me to get a good score in anthropology and secure a good rank in the exam. In my experience, GS papers are often unpredictable in scoring, and thus optional becomes very important to secure marks in the mains. 

I sincerely hope that my anthropology notes will help you to get more content, better structure and higher marks in anthropology.

I have made a sincere effort to make my notes available to everyone in the civil services community. All of these are available on this telegram channel. 
A lot of you gave me some constructive feedback, that the handwritten notes are not very easy to read and take very long to decode (my handwriting is terrible 😅) and that the structures of answer writing are not clear. This was the reason for me to digitise and further structure my notes digitally and make them available to you guys in the form of books.
Now that all the books are now available in the market I would like to tell you that these books represent 5 years of hard work, and i sincerely hope that none of you have to grapple with this exam for that long as it can often get very tiring and demotivating. This was the primary intention behind writing these books. 
I hope all of you can benefit from these and can clear the exam as soon as possible :)

In my experience GS4 is a very paradoxical paper, where often people score high marks without studying too much and very often people score very less despite studying a lot. Unlike the other GS papers, the GS4 ethics paper does not have a set pattern or material that one can study and remember. It requires innovation, structural thinking and the right perspective. 
In my opinion, structural thinking, using relevant examples and reading the right sources is something that is very important to score well in ethics. I have personally suffered due to referring to generic sources and books in my second attempt when I had scored 82 marks only! 
I have also made a video with Dr. Shivin discussing the strategy for ethics and I'll attach the link of the video here again.

Hello everyone. I hope all of are doing well. 
A lot of you requested some tips for prelims as I had scored good marks in CSE 2022 prelims (141.4), so I thought I'll share some of the things that worked for me in the prelims and you might benefit as well as there are only about 100 days to go.

1. Complete and revise the basic syllabus and books

Despite the rising uncertainty and difficulty level of questions in the prelims papers of recent years, there are at least 20-30 easy questions that can be handled if you have done the basic books of polity, history, environment, art and culture, science and technology and economy. 
It is very important to get all of these questions correct as these ensure that you have 50-60 marks in your hand before you attempt the moderately difficult and difficult questions. 

2. PYQ analysis

I cannot overstate the importance of PYQ analysis. Past year questions are repeated very often, and even if the exact question is not repeated, UPSC often repeats the basic theme of PYQs. Additionally, by analysing PYQs you can get an idea into what kind of correct/incorrect statements UPSC designs in questions and this helps to develop a basic instinct for intelligent guessing. 

3. Practice Tests

It is very important to do as many practice tests as possible. This has 3 benefits. First, you can be confident about your time management. Secondly, practice tests are a great way to revise as they all have detailed solutions which can help you revise and retain effectively. Thirdly, you can build your own strategy of attempting the paper by recognising your strengths and weaknesses. For example I would only attempt the easiest questions in my first iteration and then subsequently tackle the harder ones in subsequent iterations. I would suggest that everyone should do at least 30 practice tests before the final day.
I would also suggest to all the first attempters to buy OMR sheets online and to practice at least 3-4 papers with OMR sheets to make sure you don't make any bubbling or filling mistakes on the final day. 

4. Current affairs

Current affairs questions have become increasingly difficult and arbitrary in the past years. Yet it is very important to keep abreast with the important news from the past 2 years. In my opinion, the bestvway to do this is to read the newspapers regularly. Otherwise you can also refer to the monthly and yearly compilations made by coaching centres and read and revise them multiple times. I understand that often these compilations are very bulky and information heavy. To tackle this I would suggest that you focus on topics such as environment, polity, economy and science and technology, from where the number of current affairs questions are relatively more than other topics. 

5. Planning your studies and revision

Try to make a 100 day plan for the prelims examination which includes revision of all books at least 2-3 times. Revision is the key to remembering the finer points in prelims and thus the more you can revise the better. 

6. Intelligent guessing

Try to make guesses when you attempt the UPSC PYQs and practice tests as that subconsciously builds the ability to guess effectively. Additionally in depth analysis of PYQs will be helpful as you will realise that UPSC has certain patterns of framing questions. For example, generic statements that cannot be practically disproven are always correct. Also UPSC often changes data, names of people and places etc to make incorrect statements. Being cognizant of all this will make your decision making during guessing a lot better.

7. Low hanging fruits

Please prioritize your time effectively and do not give too much time to topics such as ancient and medieval history, where the cost-benefit ratio is very high. Focus on polity, environment, economy and science and technology, as on average, over 50-60 questions are from these topics.

The GS3 book has been released today. I had received a lot of DMs from people in this group asking when it will be released as I had scored good marks in GS3.
I would suggest everyone to give equal time and effort to all parts of GS3 ie. Economy, Agriculture, Science and Technology, environment and disaster management, and internal security. 

All 5 of these components have equal weightage of 50 marks each in the mains examination, and I've often seen aspirants focus a lot on economy and not giving the same amount of effort to the other parts of the syllabus. 

I have attempted my level best to comprehensively approach all parts of the paper equally and cover all parts of the syllabus categorically.

Hello everyone! 

I am happy to announce that the book on GS2 has been completed and is available in the market. 

I had scored reasonably good marks in GS2, and I feel that the structures, diagrams and syllabus oriented approach I have used is something that might benefit all of you. 

I had used multiple sources such as laxmikanth, dd basu, 2nd ARC reports and previous years' toppers notes to make my notes, and as I have arranged them according to the specific points in the syllabus, I feel the book is a comprehensive resource for the mains examination. I sincerely hope this book serves as a valuable resource to everyone!
