just finished graduation. decided to attempt upsc 2027. have 18 months basically. zero prior preparation. need complete guidance.

my situation:

- BA sociology graduate (some advantage in optional maybe)
- never read ncerts systematically
- no coaching budget initially
- full time available for preparation
- no test series experience
- reasonable english, can write okay

questions i have:

1. is 18 months enough for first serious attempt?

some say minimum 2 years needed, some toppers did in 1 year. confused about realistic timeline.

2. sequence of preparation?

should i start with prelims focus or integrated approach? some suggest prelims first then mains, others say do together.

3. ncert reading strategy?

class 6-12 all subjects? only selected chapters? or skip and directly go to standard books? this ncert debate confuses me most.

4. optional selection timing?

when should i finalize optional? start immediately or wait 2-3 months?

5. free resources vs coaching?

can i prepare from youtube and free pdfs for first 6 months? when does coaching become necessary?

6. newspaper reading?

the hindu or indian express? how much time daily? should i start from day 1 or later?

7. answer writing practice?

when to start? mains answer writing seems like different skill altogether.

8. test series?

prelims test series, mains test series - when to join each?

9. physical and mental health?

how do people study 8-10 hours daily without burning out?

10. backup plans?

should i simultaneously prepare for state pcs or bank exams? or full focus on upsc only?

what i have done so far:

- read polity ncert class 11-12
- started laxmikanth chapter 1-5
- watched some youtube orientation videos
- joined few telegram groups

feeling overwhelmed with information. everyone says something different. need clarity on fundamentals.

also, is sociology optional good choice for someone who studied it in graduation? or should i explore other options despite background?

any senior aspirant willing to mentor would be super helpful. not asking for daily guidance, just monthly check-ins maybe.

please share your first year mistakes so i can avoid them.

Fresh graduate starting UPSC in 2027 - complete beginner roadmap and realistic expectations needed

something's been on my mind and wanted to get perspectives from this community.

THE ISSUE:

started prep recently and honestly the sheer volume of content is scary. everyone talks about completing syllabus like it's normal but how??

MY PERSPECTIVE:

here's what i've observed:

1. the conventional wisdom isn't always right
2. individual situations vary significantly
3. one size doesn't fit all
4. but some principles are universal

my take: 27 batch freshers unite deserves more nuanced discussion than it usually gets.

QUESTIONS FOR COMMUNITY:

1. anyone else in similar situation?
2. how did you deal with this specific challenge?
3. what would you advise someone facing this?
4. anything i'm missing in my analysis?

NOT LOOKING FOR:

- generic motivation ("just believe in yourself")
- comparison with others' situations
- judgment about choices made

LOOKING FOR:

- honest experiences
- practical suggestions
- reality checks if i'm wrong somewhere

thanks for reading this long post. really value this community's collective wisdom. even negative feedback is welcome if it helps me see blind spots.

27 batch freshers unite - anyone else feeling overwhelmed by the syllabus or is it just me being dramatic

just graduated from kolkata university. sociology honors. now the big question: job or upsc full time? sharing my thought process because many fresh grads face this.

MY SITUATION:

- 22 years old
- no family financial pressure (privilege i acknowledge)
- sociology background (aligns with upsc)
- parents supportive of either choice
- no prior upsc preparation

OPTION 1: FULL TIME PREPARATION

pros:
- complete focus on studies
- more time for reading and answer writing
- can finish syllabus faster
- no job stress

cons:
- zero income for 2-3 years
- career gap if upsc doesnt work
- social pressure ("what are you doing?")
- mental pressure of not earning

OPTION 2: JOB + PREPARATION

pros:
- financial independence
- career backup if upsc fails
- practical experience for interview
- less family pressure

cons:
- limited study time
- tired after work
- longer preparation timeline
- divided attention

OPTION 3: PART-TIME JOB/FREELANCE

pros:
- some income but flexibility
- not full-time commitment
- best of both worlds potentially

cons:
- inconsistent income
- still time consuming
- neither here nor there feeling

MY DECISION: FULL TIME WITH TIMELINE

i decided to go full time BUT with clear conditions:

1. maximum 2 attempts full time (2027 and 2028)
2. if not cleared by then, will join workforce
3. maintaining skills through online courses
4. part time freelance writing for pocket money

WHY THIS DECISION:

1. AGE ADVANTAGE
at 22, i have time. if i start job now and then try upsc at 27-28, time constraint is real.

2. FAMILY SUPPORT
my parents can support me for 2 years. not everyone has this. i recognize the privilege.

3. COMPETITIVE PREPARATION
full time aspirants generally have edge over working professionals (not always but statistically).

4. SOCIOLOGY MATCH
my graduation subject aligns with optional. can progress faster.

5. NO DEPENDENTS
single, no loans, no emi. flexibility is maximum now.

WHAT IM DOING TO REDUCE RISK:

1. SKILL MAINTENANCE
- doing online courses in data analysis
- learning basics of digital marketing
- keeping linkedin active

2. FREELANCE WORK
- content writing gigs
- tutoring undergrad students
- 5-8k monthly (enough for personal expenses)

3. BACKUP PLANNING
- if upsc doesnt work by 2028, target:
- state psc
- banking exams
- mba
- journalism

having backup reduces mental pressure.

4. NETWORK BUILDING
- staying connected with college friends in jobs
- attending webinars and events
- not isolating completely

ADVICE FOR FELLOW FRESH GRADS:

1. ASSESS YOUR SITUATION
no universal right answer. depends on:
- family finances
- age
- subject background
- risk tolerance

2. HAVE HONEST CONVERSATION
talk to family about realistic timeline and backup.

3. DONT COMPARE
some friends will be earning. some will be in masters. your path is yours.

4. TIMELINE IS IMPORTANT
open ended preparation is recipe for disaster. set clear milestones.

5. MENTAL HEALTH PRIORITY
whatever you choose, dont neglect mental health. upsc is marathon not sprint.

MY 2027 PLAN:

months 1-4: foundation (ncerts + basics)
months 5-8: standard books + optional
months 9-12: revision + answer writing
months 13-16: test series + mains prep

targeting 2027 prelims as first serious attempt.

fellow 2027 batch fresh grads, lets connect! we can motivate each other.

will post monthly updates on my journey. wish me luck!
