okay controversial take but i genuinely believe interview preparation should start from DAY ONE of your upsc journey. not after mains. not even after prelims. from the very first day. let me explain why.

WHY START EARLY?

the upsc interview is not like a job interview where they test your knowledge. they test your PERSONALITY - your awareness, opinions, clarity of thought, ability to handle pressure, and most importantly your understanding of your own life choices.

these are not things you can develop in 2 months between mains result and interview date. they are built over time. and if you consciously work on them alongside your exam prep, you will walk into the board room with genuine confidence, not rehearsed confidence.

THE DAF IS YOUR INTERVIEW

most people dont realize this but 70% of your interview is driven by YOUR detailed application form (daf). your hobbies, educational background, work experience, home state, optional subject - everything you write becomes a potential question.

so from day 1:
- choose your hobbies WISELY. if you write "reading" as a hobby, you better have read 20+ books and can discuss them in depth
- your optional subject choice will be questioned. have a clear reason WHY you chose it
- your work experience (if any) will be explored. know your organization, your role, challenges you faced

my biggest advantage was my corporate background in pub ad optional. every corporate example i used in my optional was also interview material.

WHAT TO DO FROM DAY 1

phase 1 (during foundation building, months 1-6):
- read about your home state: know its geography, economy, schemes, problems, recent developments
- develop 2-3 genuine hobbies that you can speak about intelligently
- start forming opinions on current issues (not extreme positions, balanced views)
- work on spoken english/communication if needed

phase 2 (during prelims prep, months 7-12):
- practice articulating your views verbally. record yourself answering questions.
- start a journal of your opinions on important issues
- know your optional subject deeply enough to defend why you chose it

phase 3 (during mains prep, months 13-18):
- your mains answer writing IS interview preparation. the way you structure arguments in writing is how you should structure them verbally
- practice with study group - take turns being interviewer and candidate

phase 4 (post mains, dedicated interview prep):
- fill DAF carefully (every word can become a question)
- mock interviews (minimum 5-6 with different panels)
- current affairs intensive - know the last 6 months in depth

COMMON INTERVIEW MISTAKES

1. memorizing answers: the board can spot rehearsed answers instantly. they WILL ask follow-ups to test if you actually understand
2. being defensive: if you dont know something, say so. "i am not fully aware of this but based on what i know..." is respected
3. trying to be someone you are not: they want authenticity. if you are from a small town, own it. if you have work gaps, explain them honestly
4. ignoring current affairs: "i focused on mains so i havent been following news" is a death sentence
