leaving tech job for upsc - honest reality check after 6 months of full-time preparation quit my software dev job 6 months ago for upsc. sharing the honest reality - both good and bad - for fellow tech folks considering this.

my background:
- 4 years in tech (2 startups, 1 mnc)
- decent package (22 lpa)
- always had upsc dream but kept postponing
- finally took the leap at 27

why i left:
- tech work felt meaningless (another crud app, really?)
- wanted to do something for society
- upsc dream since childhood
- financial cushion to sustain 2-3 years
- now or never feeling

the good parts:

1. focus
- 10-12 hours study actually possible
- no meetings, no standups, no deployments
- mental bandwidth fully on upsc

2. tech skills help
- note making on notion is efficient
- online resources navigation is easy
- data analysis mindset helps in answer writing
- logical thinking helps in csat and analysis questions

3. fresh perspective
- understanding technology topics is easy
- e-governance, digital india comes naturally
- science and tech section sorted

4. financial planning
- had savings to sustain
- no immediate pressure
- can focus purely on studies

the hard parts:

1. identity crisis
- went from "software engineer at x" to "upsc aspirant"
- relatives and friends dont understand
- constant "why did you leave such good job" questions
- imposter syndrome is real

2. routine struggle
- work gave structure, now i have to create my own
- procrastination is easier when no accountability
- netflix and youtube are tempting

3. financial anxiety
- even with savings, watching them deplete is stressful
- what if multiple attempts needed?
- opportunity cost calculation haunts at night

4. social isolation
- friends are getting promoted, married, buying houses
- i am reading polity at 27
- fomo is real especially on linkedin

5. starting from scratch
- engineering background means humanities subjects are new
- history, polity, geography - all from basics
- learning curve is steep

what i wish i knew:

1. start while working
- could have covered basics while employed
- ncerts, optional foundation possible in evenings
- would have saved 3-4 months

2. financial runway
- keep 3 years of expenses minimum
- include coaching, test series, books
- hidden costs add up

3. mental preparation
- upsc is lonely journey
- build support system before leaving
- therapy/counseling helps - not joking

4. backup plan
- state psc as parallel option
- keep skills somewhat updated
- dont burn bridges completely

advice for tech folks:
